Comments by Nick Smith. Head of PR, Royal Ascot.

The standard of racing at Ascot was increasing year on year as was the popularity of the racecourse. But the facilities no longer came up to the standard that the racing public had come to expect.

So Royal Ascot launched a marketing programme to consider how to make the event more inclusive and came to conclusion the only way forward was a complete redevelopment.

The team at Royal Ascot wanted a grandstand that would be a statement about what Ascot stands for. Nick and his team worked to get financial credibility to borrow £185 million, and the design says something about Ascot both as racecourse and village;

"I’ve been to the best racecourses in world, Australian, Japanese and American. This will be the shining example for sport stadium design. When the track is relaid and the underpasses are under way, it will look like a piece of art with fantastic facilities – that’s the advantage of starting from scratch."

"Whatever happens in the future, this will be a major chapter in Ascot’s history.
